Franschhoek Food Emporium

Franschhoek, South Africa

The interior fit-out of this up-market delicatessen in the culturally rich Franschhoek was commissioned by a well-travelled food connoisseur, who wished to offer fine foods to discerning clients in a sophisticated retail environment.

The client specifically requested that an Art Deco inspired style be followed in the design of the new retail space. This was interpreted and developed in a more contemporary idiom whilst adhering to the objectives of opulence and exuberance represented by this visual arts design style.

The store is symmetrically arranged around a centrally placed serving counter as the main focal and functional centre (great emphasis was placed on the functional and practical aspects of food preparation and display without sacrificing aesthetic considerations). This unit is flanked on either side by tall, frameless glass doors, which opens the interior space entirely onto outdoors courtyards on either side (front and back). Meticulously detailed joinery elements in American Walnut with Carrara Bianco marble countertops, reference the stylized geometrical shapes typical of the Art Deco period whilst Piano Black lacquered surfaces, silver leaved ceilings and rich purple walls finished in Venetian waxed plaster compliment the luxurious merchandise on display.

Completed as Partner at Meyer + Vorster Architects, Urban Designers and Interior Designers
